Upcoming Events at McMillan
Greetings McMillan Families!
With a busy January coming to an end, and Parent-Teacher Conferences on the horizon, I thought this might be a good time to bring some of the other exciting things happening at the school to your attention. Students and staff kicked off an exciting new year after the break with a Husky pep rally that had the students cheering and clapping in support of their peers who worked together to turn Mrs. Heitz and myself into snowmen. The fun, laughter and shouts of encouragement were extraordinarily satisfying to staff, who have all been working so hard this year to rebuild school culture and sense of belonging for all students. This continues to be our school goal, and you can see more about that under School Plan on our website. This space is updated throughout the year, so be sure to look more than once!
Moving forward, we will continue with our monthly Husky Assemblies, recognizing students for their positive attributes and giving them the opportunity to stand up in front of their school mates to be honoured. Ask your child if they can tell you what it means to be courageous, as that is our focus virtue this month.
Kindergarten Registration has officially started! If you have neighbors with K aged students, please remind them to go online and register. Registration for new gr. 1 -5 students starts in February. If you have recently moved and so are now an out of catchment student, please contact the office to discuss your options for next September.
School Lunches continue to be available for purchase. You can get information on how to do that here
Next Friday, January 27 is Hat Day. Wear your favorite hat or wear a wacky hat...the choice is yours! Our monthly calendar is updated frequently so you can stay on top of school events
February has several dates to note, including Parent Teacher Conferences, that happen on early dismissal days. Wednesday, Feb. 15 we will dismiss at 11:15, and on Thursday, Feb. 16 we dismiss at 12:10. Evening interviews will be available on Thursday, Feb. 16 from 4:00 - 7:00. We will email you the link to book your conferences before Feb. 6, when the site goes live.
If you are interested, please check out this link to a parent workshop scheduled for Feb. 16 by the district. The title of the workshop is Rising to Resilience
Feb. 22 is Pink Shirt Day. Students talk about and engage in anti-bullying awareness activities all year long, but this is a day when McMillan staff and students renew their pledge to treat others as they would wish to be treated. That being said, bullying continues to happen in many forms (physical, verbal, emotional and cyber). It is so important to build awareness, resilience and empowerment so that students have the tools to deal effectively with situations, whether they are actively involved, or just observers. Please connect with your child's teacher if your child is struggling with peers in any way, so we can help keep McMillan a safe place for all students!
Finally, our PAC is working hard to put together a spring fun fair for our entire community to enjoy, scheduled fofr June 2. If you have time, there are many ways you can help, whether it be with the lead up planning or execution the day of. You can get contact details and more information as it develops, here.
We are all looking forward to a terrific second term, with lots of learning and fun for everyone. Your partnership in this makes all the difference, keeping McMillan Elementary a positive and supportive place for staff and students alike.
Thank you,
Mrs. Jordan
