First Day Info

Sep 3 2024, 8:25 - 11am
McMillan Elementary

It's almost that time... time to welcome everyone back to school!   Below are some reminders, and additional information about what to expect the first day back.

All students should be dropped off in the upper loop. Please obey all no parking signs and keep the loop moving! On Oakhill, please respect our neighbors' driveways by not blocking them. Refrain from making U turns in the street. It's a busy time and we want everyone to arrive at school safely. If you wish to park and walk your child to the building, please come early enough to find a spot on the road, or park down in the church parking lot.

Please do not send any new school supplies this week. Students can bring their old pencil box, with pencils, some colouring tools, scissors, and a glue stick, if they have them. Teachers will advise you when you should send school supplies, likely Monday, Sept. 9.

Grades 1 - 5:

Sept. 3, is a half day. School will be in session 8:25 - 11:00. On this day, please have your child return to their last year's classroom. New students can find a staff member on duty outside to find out who their teacher will be, and what door to line up at for this day only.

Sept. 4 - 6 will be full days. Students will be entering and exiting the school from assigned grade group doors. These doors will be marked with the Grade number, and students will be shown their door before being sent home on Tuesday. Students will be placed in rotating groups, meeting and getting to know all the teachers in their grade group.

Friday, Sept. 6 your child will bring home their permanent class assignment. We are hopeful that everyone will be feeling positive about the exciting year we have planned! If you have any concerns regarding your child's placement, please take some time to get to know your child's teacher and let things settle in. In most cases, worries and fears dissipate as new friends are made and relationships are built.

Kindergarten:

Sept. 3 and 4 are dedicated to 1:1 meetings. You will attend only for your assigned meeting.

Sept. 5 gradual entry begins. You should already have the schedule, but a copy will be sent out again to everyone in the last week of August. Students will be spending some time with each teacher during Thursday and Friday in flexible groupings.

Kindergarten students will be assigned their classroom on Friday, September 6. You will receive a letter from the teacher at the end of the day to inform you of your child's placement.

We thank you for your support and patience as we continue to fine tune our return to school process. It is our intention to ensure that every student makes a smooth and positive transition back to school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school during the week of August 26 - 30.
